What is Vertcoin?

Vertcoin is different. Unlike many other coins you will see on this forum, Vertcoin has a purpose, a goal which drives the community and developers to constantly innovate. Committed to the decentralisation Satoshi originally dreamed of, Vert has consistently evolved over time to combat the threats to this dream. As a result, one of our main features is ASIC resistance, having forked successfully to a new proof of work algorithm called "Lyra2RE" upon discovering that Scrypt-N ASICs were being developed. We believe that by keeping the mining process in the hands of those with generalised, low-risk, consumer grade hardware, we can lower the entry requirement for miners, increasing the number of individuals mining the coin which in turn leads to true decentralisation.

Bitcoinupdate: UPDATE 17 December 2014 - New Lyra2RE Algorithm no more Scrypt-N
It was anticipated that VertCoin (VTC) will hardfork to the new Lyra2RE algorithm at around 16th this month at block 208301, however we have reached the fork a bit earlier. So if you are mining VertCoin you should switch to the new Lyra2RE GPU miners and to pools that have already switched to the new algorithm. Some people have anticipated that after the fork the price of VTC will increase, but this did not happen as currently VertCoin is quite profitable to mine and sell directly and apparently a lot of people are doing exactly this resulting in exchange rate dropping. This is just the week day after the fork, so we should wait and see how the Lyra2RE fork will affect VTC – will it help the coin or on the contrary.

White paper: https://vertcoin.org/downloads/Vertcoin_Lyra2RE_Paper_11292014.pdf

Our revolutionary new proof of work algorithm, designed to be ASIC resistant at its core, made its debut at block 208301. In addition, responding to calls from our miners, Lyra2RE has a ~15% power usage reduction on X11. Lyra2RE has replaced Scrypt-N, our previous proof of work and a Vertcoin innovation in itself, in order to defeat the ASIC miners that were released for it. The fork has successfully been carried out, once again making Vertcoin a decentralised, ASIC-free zone and fulfilling Vertcoin's promise to hard-fork if an ASIC threat becomes apparent, a promise which Litecoin made, but didn't deliver on.

Stealth Addresses

Stealth addresses are a way for a payer and a payee to have a private exchange of funds.

VertVerser

Spend Vertcoin wherever Bitcoin is accepted using VertVerser. Simply enter the Bitcoin address, send your Vertcoin and VertVerser does the rest. We accept that Bitcoin is going to be the primary crypto-currency for the foreseeable future and whilst we'd like to see this change, often you simply cannot avoid making a payment with Bitcoin. Thus, VertVerser allows you to spend your Vertcoin without having to exchange anything. Combined with services like The Crypto Depot, it is now possible to buy almost anything online with Vertcoin.
